Terry Robb & Paul Chasman Together Again
Music-lovers have a great opportunity to hear the music of two virtuoso guitar wizards on Friday, June 3. Terry Robb and Paul Chasman will be appearing together in Yachats on Friday, June 3 at the Yachats Commons. Terry Robb is a passionate, precise player whose ability to grind out hot shot licks makes for a commanding onstage presence. Paul Chasman has made his mark in idioms as diverse as blues, bluegrass, ragtime, jazz, and classical. Terry and Chasman played together in the Acoustic Guitar Summit, and are looking forward to re-uniting on June 3. The concert will begin at 7:00 pm. Admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at Waldport Video in Waldport, at Mari’s Books in Yachats, or by calling the Yachats Youth & Family Activities Program at 541-547-4599. Proceeds of this concert will support YYFAP programs for children and families.
YYFAP Garden Plot is Feeding the Community
The community garden that YYFAP (Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program) kids have been involved in has been a great success in it’s first year. Kids have enjoyed going to the garden after school, around 4:30pm, once a week. They walk over to the Yachats Demonstration and Community Garden on 7th Street carrying tools and buckets or baskets. They walk back with armloads of food. One boy said he’d like to go to the garden every day.
Kids have been involved in every phase in the garden plot, from seeding sowing to harvesting and eating the vegetables. To date we have harvested broccoli, dinosaur kale, red Russian kale, dill, parsley, Swiss chard, carrots, Dragon carrots, potatoes and onions! Much of this food was eaten during our afterschool program, Rec PLUS during snacktime, or taken home to share with their families, or donated to the food pantry.
The kids at YYFAP have helped to beautify the garden using their creativity. Several kids painted a bright and cheery sign and several decorative rocks. Others planted flowers that were donated by a community member who saw the wish list on our website. The Helping Hands group made and put up a ‘salty dog’ scarecrow, too.
There is still more to harvest and the garden needs some maintenance in order to have it ready for winter. If you’d like to join in and help us out, meet us at YYFAP, Nov. 11th and Nov. 18th at 4:15pm for the last 2 Garden days of the year.
If you have any questions, please call garden volunteer Cicely Bernard, at 541-547-4483.
South County Preschool Artists
The children of the South County Preschool in Yachats are having fun time learning! In addition to the ABC’s and 123’s they’ve been learning about the music of The Beatles, and Vincent Van Gogh. They even created their own ‘Yellow Submarines,’ and Van Gogh inspired ‘Starry Night’. Next up: Henri Matisse!
YYFAP Welcomes Bee and Allison
We are happy to welcome two new staff members to YYFAP. Bee Bui joins us as the new Recreation P.L.U.S. Team Leader. She will be offering great activities and support to all the kids attending YYFAP’s afterschool program. Allison Bethel will be teaching preschool and leading YYFAP’s Parent & Family Support program. Both of these young women come with great enthusiasm, lots of ideas, and a background in child and youth development.
