Scholarships for Youth Activities in Yachats

The Yachats Youth & Family Activities Program has received a $3000 grant from the Bill Healy Foundation to be used for Summer Explorations scholarships for local children and youth.  Summer Explorations are week-long themed day-camps, scheduled from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm each day.  Children may stay for Recreation PLUS until 6:00 pm for a small additional fee.  This year Summer Explorations include:

5 Days & A Playled by Robin Murphy

M-F July 12 – 16; 10-2 pm.  Performance July 16 at 6:00 pm.  Suggested ages: 7-13

A week-long journey through the process of putting on a play.  From script to stage, children discover what’s behind the magic of theater.  At the end of the week, participants will perform before an audience.

Nature Journalsled by Gretchen Armstrong

M-F July 19-23; 10– 2 pm. Suggested ages:  9-13

Experience and reflect on nature through art, poetry, collages, diagrams, and more- in your very own nature journal.

This Is Who I Am led by Carol Ritter

M-F July 26-30; 10– 2 pm. Suggested ages:  7-10

Learn about yourself and how to be a friend to others through games, movement, outdoor challenges, and creative activities.

Mystery Festivalled by Debbie Jackson

M-F August 2-6; 10– 2 pm. Suggested ages:  9-13

Conduct forensic science tests and exercise your critical thinking skills as you solve “The Case of the Missing Millionaire.”

Amazing Artifacts – led by Cicely Bernard

M-F August 9-13; 10– 2 pm. Suggested ages:  8 & up.  Guardians invited.

Explore Yachats’ history, traditions, and natives.  Hike trails, identify wild local food sources and discover artifacts.

Youth Sailing Classes in South County

Back by popular demand! The Yachats Youth & Family Activities Program and the Oregon Boating Foundation are sponsoring sailing classes for youth ages 10 -16 this summer.  The classes will take place Monday – Friday, July 26 – 30, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at Eckman Lake in Waldport. Classes will include boater safety training, knots and nautical terminology, and lots of time on the water in sailboats.  Instructors are certified by U.S. Sailing.  Students must be able to swim 50 yards, and tread water for two minutes. The cost of the class series is $110.00 ; Scholarships are available.  Registration deadline is July 16. For more information, or to register, call 547-4599.

Don’t forget… YYFAP is the place I want to be!

Bring out the tie-dye and join the YYFAP group in the traditional La De Da parade on July 4th. Meet behind the Yachats Commons at 11:30 AM. No tie-dye or want something new and fresh for the parade? Well- you are just in luck because all ages are invited to a special tie-dye workshop on Friday, July 2nd from 4-6 PM. Learn new tie-dye techniques at YYFAP (in the Yachats Commons basement).  It is only $1 per color and you can bring your own items. You can even make something for your dog for ‘Paws for the La De Da parade.’ We also have items for sale such as shirts ($5), tank-tops ($7), scarves ($7), hats ($7) and even bed sheets ($15). YYFAP is going green!

Tuesday, June 29th starting at 2PM, Laura Kris from Dahl Disposal will be conducting a WORM BIN DEMONSTRATION during Rec. PLUS. Children, parents, and anyone who is interested in composting are invited. Kris will be teaching about the materials, maintenance, and cycle of a worm bin. She will also put together a new worm bin for the Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program as well as harvest worms from an existing bin. This class is FREE. There are always new and fun activities during Rec.PLUS. Rec. P.L.U.S (Passages to Learning, Understanding and Success) is a drop- in program and children ages 6 and up are welcome to join the fun during the summer from 2-6PM. This summer, Rec. PLUS will be offering tie-dye workshops, pie -making contests, water games, scavenger hunts, field trips, dance classes, self-defense classes, and more! Rec. PLUS is located in the Yachats Commons basement and children must be picked up before 6:00 PM. Cost: $50 per family for the whole summer, or $10 per week or $5 per day. Cost: $1 per color; items for sale or bring your own

Follow Your Foodled by Cicely Bernard

When: T-F July 6-9 at Noon- 2 PM

Cost: $20 per family

Discover where food comes from. Visit a farm and garden center; prepare food and of course eat. Must be accompanied by guardian.

Fishing 101led by Don Niskanen

For all ages!

When: Mon & Wed, July 12 & 14

Cost: Free

Learn where to fish; when to fish; and how to choose a rod and reel, baits and lures, rigs, hooks, knots and other fishing tackle. Special field trip: July 17. Pre-registration required.

S.A.I.Lled by Merry Petitclair

Ages: 10-16

When: Mon-Fri, July 26-30 at 10-4PM

Cost: $110

S.A.I.L: Strong Assets Improve Lives. Upon completion of this course, taught by U.S. sailing instructor, each student will be able to confidently sail a small boat in a controlled area with moderate wind. Students must be able to swim 50 yards, and tread water for two minutes. Located at Eckman Lake. Scholarships available. Pre-registration required.
