Summer

The Yachats Youth & Family Activities Program has some great activities lined up for all ages.  We are also excited to be able to offer youth activities from 10:00 until 6:00 PM for five weeks this summer.

Rec. P.L.U.S (Passages to Learning, Understanding and Success) is our drop- in program and children ages 6 and up are welcome to join the fun during the summer from 2-6PM. This summer, Rec. PLUS will be packed with exciting adventures and activities. There will be lots of free play, tie-dye workshops, pie -making contests, water games, scavenger hunts, field trips, dance classes, self-defense classes, and more! Children are supervised by at least one staff member and a trained volunteer. Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and bring strong skills to Rec. PLUS such as art, beading, gardening, and of course-devotion to serving our youth. Rec. PLUS is located in the Yachats Commons basement and children must be picked up before 6:00 PM. Cost: $50 per family for the whole summer, or $10 per week or $5 per day. Limited scholarships available.

Summer Explorations is a structured program. Each exploration is a themed week –long class; pre-registration is required; and participation is limited. Children will participate in a variety of hands-on activities to engage their minds, hands, and creativity in exciting new ways. Many activities will take place outdoors. The cost of Summer Explorations is $45 per week or $200 for all 5 weeks! Lunch NOT provided, please bring a sack lunch. Scholarships and sibling discounts available.

5 Days & A Playled by Robin Murphy

M-F July 12 – 16, 10 am-2 pm. Suggested ages: 7-13
A week-long journey through the process of putting on a play. From script to stage, children discover what’s behind the magic of theater. At the end of the week, participants will perform before an audience.Performance July 16 at 6:00 pm.

Nature Journalsled by Gretchen Armstrong
M-F July 19-23, 10 am – 2 pm. Suggested ages: 9-13
Experience and reflect on nature through art, poetry, collages, diagrams, and more- in your very own nature journal.

This Is Who I Amled by Carol Ritter
M-F July 26-30, 10 am – 2 pm.Suggested ages: 7-10
Learn about yourself and how to be a friend to others through games, movement, outdoor challenges, and creative activities.

Mystery Festival– led by Debbie Jackson
M-F August 2-6, 10 am – 2 pm.
Suggested ages: 9-13
Conduct forensic science tests and exercise your critical thinking skills as you solve “The Case of the Missing Millionaire.”

Amazing Artifacts
– led by Cicely Bernard
M-F August 9-13, 10 am – 2 pm.
Suggested ages: 8 & up. Guardians invited.
Explore Yachats history, traditions, and natives. Hike trails, identify wild local food sources, discover artifacts.

Beading 101- led by Pat Hayner
Suggested ages: 10+; Adults welcome
Cost: Free 18 under/ Adults: $1
When: Every Wednesday
Learn to bead including: stringing necklaces, memorywire bracelets, and cabochon.

Tie-Dye Workshop- led by Carol Ritter
All ages are welcome!
When: Friday, July 2 at 4-6 PM
Cost: $1 per color; items for sale or bring your own
Learn new tie-dye techniques and wear your new creation in the traditional La-De-Da parade on 4th of July.

Babysitter Training- led by Ceci Pratt
Ages: 11-15
When: Saturday, July 3 at 9-4 PM
Cost: $40
Become certified by the American Red Cross and start a summer business! Learn basic child care, safety issues, and more. Pre-registration required, call (541)547-4599.

Follow Your Food- led by Cicely Bernard
Ages: 0-6
When: T-F July 6-9 at Noon- 2 PM
Cost: $20 per family
Discover where food comes from. Visit a farm and garden center; prepare food and of course eat. Must be accompanied by guardian.

Fishing 101-led by Don Niskanen
For all ages!
When: Mon & Wed, July 12 & 14
Cost: Free
Learn where to fish; when to fish; and how to choose a rod and reel, baits and lures, rigs, hooks, knots and other fishing tackle. Special field trip: July 17. Pre-registration required.

S.A.I.L- led by Merry Petitclair
Ages: 10-16
When: Mon-Fri, July 26-30 at 10-4PM
Cost: $110
S.A.I.L: Strong Assets Improve Lives. Upon completion of this course, taught by U.S. sailing instructor, each student will be able to confidently sail a small boat in a controlled area with moderate wind. Students must be able to swim 50 yards, and tread water for two minutes. Located at Eckman Lake. Scholarships available. Pre-registration required.

Swing Dance 101- Led by Ella Kress
Ages: 11-18
When: Tuesday, August 24
Cost: Free
Learn how to swing dance. Pre-registration required.
