Need More Food?

OSU Master Gardeners have welcomed YYFAP to the Yachats Demonstration and Community Garden (located just across 7th street from the Yachats Presbyterian Church).

In mid- June, the plots were weeded by the Helping Hands group. Compost has been amended into the soil and beds have been made by volunteers, YYFAP youth, and Sea Aire Assisted Living residents. With all of the community support, we have a flourishing garden abundant with broccoli, kale, chard, fava beans, oregano, chives and carrots! In fact, we have more food then our volunteers and kids can harvest. Please help us gather food and bring it to the Yachats food pantry to share with our community. We meet Thursdays at the Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program (located in the Yachats Commons basement) around 4 PM and then head to the Yachats Demonstration and Community Garden. If you have questions or would like to help gather food for the Yachats food pantry please, call (541) 547-4599.

Scavenger Hunt Was a Success!

We had three teams trekking through the city of Yachats looking in nearby shops, skipping to the beach for agates, serenading locals, and helping strangers cross the road. After an hour of exploring Yachats and completing the Scavenger Hunt missions, the teams met back at the Yachats Commons and shared their findings in front of the Judges. The teams persuaded, danced, sang, and even argued for their points. The teams and judges waited nervously with root beer floats in hand for the winning team. In the end, Team Purple won but no one went home empty handed. Each participant had a variety of prizes to choose from. Prizes ranged from Topper’s gift certificates, white chocolate teeth provided by Distant Shores, a Judith’s Kitchen Tools gift certificate to a back-pack full of school supplies to start the school year with. It was a fabulous time and we hope you can join us for next year’s end of the summer annual scavenger hunt. Check out the photos.

YYFAP Has a Plot in the Yachats Community Garden!

OSU Master Gardeners have welcomed YYFAP to the Yachats Demonstration and Community Garden (located just across 7th street from the Yachats Presbyterian Church).

In mid- June, the plots were weeded by the Helping Hands group. Compost has been amended into the soil and beds have been made by volunteers, YYFAP kids of all ages, and residents of the Sea Aire Assisted Living. With all of the community support we have successfully grown starts from seeds. Those seedlings were planted in the garden and have been watered and tended by kids, staff, and volunteers. We have broccoli, kale, chard, fava beans, oregano, chives, and carrots!

We have harvested radishes, broccoli, and kale, which we are using for snack during the afterschool program- Rec PLUS, and anything extra will be donated to the Yachats Food pantry-located in the Yachats Commons. We hope to grow more food to share with our community including community events-Thanks everyone who helped make this possible!
